Notes

Whiteford served with the 3rd Battalion militia before the war and joined the RAAF Reserve on 24 August 1940 while working for the Commonwealth railways at Port Augusta. He enlisted in the RAAF in March 1941 and trained in Canada before arriving in the UK in January 1942. He was slightly injured in a training accident near Cocksburnpath, Berwickshire, when his Spitfire crash landed on 11 August 1942. He flew Spitfires from bases in England and Italy with 453, 129 and 81 Squadrons. Whiteford returned to Canberra after the war and lived in Griffith. He died in August 1963 aged 48 years and is buried in the ex-service's section of Woden Cemetery.
