After initial training at Bradfield Park in Sydney, Walker was sent to Canada where he was attached to the Royal Canadian Air Force under the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS). He undertook training at Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary until returning to Australia in April 1945 after the suspension of EATS because of a surplus of air crew. He was then posted to RAAF facilities at Point Cook, Ascot Vale and Adelaide before his discharge in August 1945.
