Notes
Smith was a student at St. Edmund's from 1958 to 1965 when his family lived at Lambert Street in Lyneham. He was working as a journalist in Brisbane when he was called up in May 1968 as a National Serviceman. Smith served in Vietnam from 3 February 1969 with the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.
Smith died at the 1st Australian Field Hospital in Vung Tau on 11 August 1969 after being hit by friendly fire in Phuoc Tuy province when "a sentry group, operating in thick jungle, heard movement outside its perimeter and opened fire". His mother died the month before. Both are buried in Woden Cemetery.
