Notes
McNicol was a Scotsman employed as a farrier at the Royal Military College during 1916. He enlisted in Sydney on 9 October 1916 as a Sapper with the reinforcements for the Engineers spending three months in training at the Engineers Training Depot, Brightlingsea before arriving in France in May 1917 and being taken on strength with the 2nd Field Company Engineers. By the end of the year he had been appointed to the rank of Farrier and transferred to 1st Division Headquarters. By the time he returned to Australia in May 1919 he was a Sergeant and was discharged on 12 August 1919. He was the brother of Donald McNicol.
Description - height 5 feet 11¾ inches, weight 164 pounds, chest 37-40 inches, medium complexion, brown eyes, black hair, Presbyterian, scar from an appendix operation.
