Notes
Hayes had previously served eight years with the Royal Irish Fusiliers and 15 months with the NSW Tropical Company as part of the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force which occupied Rabaul, New Guinea at the beginning of the war. He arrived in England after Christmas 1917 with reinforcements for the 55th Battalion and served with them in France from March to October 1918. He married a Sarah Polley in Bristol in 1919 before returning to Australia in February 1920.
