Notes

An electricity meter reader, Backhouse married Iris Read on 7 January 1939 in Victoria and they lived in Ainslie. He joined the CMF on 1 May 1942 in Canberra and trained as a signalman. He served in Papua in 1943 and enlisted in the AIF on 12 November 1944 by which time he had arrived in Aitape, New Guinea. Backhouse was discharged on 13 February 1946.

Description – height 5 feet 9½ inches, brown eyes, dark complexion, brown hair, Presbyterian.
