Ashton was on a posting to RAAF Base Fairbairn in 1966 when he was given an award for outstanding service after preventing an accident when a faulty coupling gushed fuel while he was attempting to refuel an Iroquois helicopter. He served in Vietnam with No.2 Squadron from 4 February 1970 to 30 November 1970.
