Ashman lived at Duntroon during the 1950s and the 1960s where his father worked as a lecturer. He attended Duntroon School (where he was school Captain in 1955) and attained his Leaving Certificate from Canberra High School in 1962 after which he entered the Royal Military College. After graduating in 1966 he was commissioned in the Royal Australian Armoured Corps and served in Vietnam in B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment between 19 November 1969 and 12 November 1970. Ashman retired from the army with the rank of Colonel. He represented the ACT in schoolboy tennis and was a winger with the First XV at RMC.
