Algie entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon on 12 March 1914 in the fourth intake of cadets and graduated on 3 April 1916. He embarked for England in May 1916 with fellow RMC cadets Mackey, Chambers and Wardell with the 10th Machine Gun Company. After being appointed to the rank of Captain in October 1916, Algie was sent to France but became ill and returned to England in January 1917 where he joined the 3rd Machine Gun Company. He broke his ankle in a training accident so it wasn't until the end of March 1918 that he landed in France. He was wounded in action on 6 May when a gun shot to the thigh fractured his femur ultimately resulting in his return to Australia in January 1919. He died in Elwood, Victoria in 1965.
