Notes
Abel's enlistment form includes the names William John Greene and George William Norton and after the war he preferred to be known as William Scott Abel. He served with the Australian Army Service Corps in the 6th Division in the Middle East from April 1941 to August 1942 where he was graded as a 'butcher'. In 1942 he was assigned to No.1 Company AASC and was sent to New Guinea where he developed hydrocele and returned to Australia. Abel lived in Queanbeyan after the war and in 1969 wrote that his date of birth was 2 July 1920 and not 1917 as he stated upon enlisting. Abel died on 4 May 1998 and was interred at the Tharwa Road Cemetery, Queanbeyan. He had been living in Crawford Street, Queanbeyan.
