Lanham gained his Intermediate Certificate at Canberra High School in 1938. He was working as a mechanic when he was mobilised with the 3rd Battalion (a militia unit) on 5 January 1942 and arrived in Port Moresby in Papua on 29 May 1942. He entered the Kokoda Track with the 3rd Battalion on 8 September 1942 but at the end of that month he was detached to New Guinea Force Motor Transport Pool. Lanham served in Papua until June 1944 during which he enlisted in the AIF (on 18 July 1943). Four months later he was sent to Lae in New Guinea before finally returning to Australia in July 1945.
After the war Lanham married and completed his training as a mechanic at the Canberra Technical College. He and his family later moved to Narooma on the south coast of New South Wales where he died in January 2004.
