Notes
Kay was the son of Robert and Mary Kay and the nephew of William Inglis who was killed in action in France in 1916. He was born at Duntroon in 1914 and went to school at Queanbeyan and Telopea Park. After school he worked as a clerk with the Queanbeyan Council and then for the Lake George Mining Company at Captains Flat. He was a prominent sportsman, playing A grade in rugby union and soccer but is best known for playing Australian Rules with Queanbeyan and Rugby League with the Queanbeyan Blues. He married Alma Dolan in Melbourne on 5 June 1943.
He served with the RAAF in Darwin and after the war worked for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Hotel Canberra and the builder, T.C. O'Connor. Kay served on the board of the ACT Gaming & Liquor Authority and for two years organised the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal in the ACT. Robert Kay died on 17 April 1991 and is buried in Gungahlin Cemetery. His first wife Alma, who also served in World War 2, died in 1961.
