Stuart arrived in Canberra from Yass in 1939 and worked for the PMG Department. He was mobilised with the 3rd Militia Battalion in October 1941 and arrived in Port Moresby in May 1942. Stuart served in 3 Battalion's transport platoon during the Kokoda campaign in the Owen Stanley Ranges in Papua in late 1942. He returned to Australia in January 1943 and enlisted in the AIF on 18 March 1943. He married in April and was transferred to the 36th Battalion in July 1943 shortly before returning to Papua. He served in New Britain from October 1944 until October 1945 before transferring to the 2/1 Guard Battalion.

After returning to Canberra he rejoined the PMG until 1949 when he shifted to W.B. Freebody's motor garage. Stuart represented Yass and Canberra in rugby league and Canberra in rugby union. He died on 7 October 1950 when the truck he was driving collided with a motor cycle on State Circle near the Prime Minister's Lodge.
