In September 1939 ANA aircraft were taken over by the RAAF and ANA mechanics were asked to enlist in the Citizen's Air Force for two years. Wade served with 8 Squadron in Canberra working on aircraft maintenance. In May 1940 the aircraft were returned to ANA and Wade was given the choice of enlisting in the RAAF or joining the RAAF Reserve. He opted for the later and remained in the reserve until he was demobilised on 7 June 1948 as a Fitter IIE.
