Andrews, a pilot with No.36 Squadron, flew Hercules transport planes from RAAF Base Richmond to Vietnam between September 1966 to December 1967 before being transferred to No.5 Squadron at Fairbairn to train as a helicopter pilot. He served in the Vietnam war with No.9 Squadron from 4 February 1969 to 24 December 1969.
