Allen's father was a Methodist Minister in Canberra during the war. He attended Telopea Park School and worked as a clerk with the Attorney-General's Department. Allen trained as a pilot at Temora and Uranquinty before embarking for the UK where he joined RAF Squadron 43. He flew Spitfires on 148 sorties. He married Elizabeth Shepherd in 1948 and died in South Australia on 10 August 2012.
