Charlie Boag and his family arrived at the Brickyards (in Yarralumla) in 1915 when his father got a job as foreman of roads and bridges. They later moved to Molonglo. Boag belonged to the 3rd Battalion militia and reported for service on the day war broke out in September 1939. He served with 3 Battalion and was appointed to the rank of Captain a few weeks before embarking with his unit to Port Moresby in May 1942. He officially enlisted in the AIF on 14 July 1942 but remained with 3 Battalion when they entered the Kokoda Track on 5 September 1942. He commanded C Company during the battles at Ioribaiwa and Imita Ridge, Templetons Crossing and Oivi before succumbing to malaria in November and being evacuated to Australia in January 1943.

Boag was transferred to 2/3 Battalion in July 1943 after 3 Battalion was disbanded, and then detached to 2/5 Battalion where he became Adjutant in March 1945 when his unit was in Aitape, New Guinea. AWM photograph 066464 shows Boag with the 2/5 Battalion at Wondecla, Queensland on 23 May 1944. Boag and his wife moved to Dirrawan Gardens in Reid in 1944 and they were closely involved with the Reid Tennis club. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on 9 June 1986 in recognition of his public service and service to tennis.
