Allwork was a carpenter who had played rugby league for North Sydney during 1933-34 before moving to Goulburn the following year and to Canberra in 1939. He enlisted in June 1940 and joined the 2/3 Pioneers, arriving in the Middle East in November 1941. In May 1942 he was found guilty of an "offence against the person of an invaded country" and for "striking a superior officer" and was sentenced to 60 days field punishment. He rejoined his unit in August 1942 but was killed in action during the Battle of El Alamein in Egypt on 31 October 1942.
