Clark was mobilised on 8 August 1940 and spent time at training camps at Wallgrove and Greta but he was not called up to serve with the 3rd Battalion (militia) until 7 March 1942. He and his unit were sent to Port Moresby in May 1942 and Clark entered the Kokoda Track on 5 September 1942 as part of Maroubra Force. He served with 3 Battalion during battles at Iorabaiwa, Imita Ridge, Templetons Crossing and Oivi before being hospitalised at Soputa with abdominal pains. Clark was repatriated to Australia before joining 36 Battalion in June 1943. He served on New Britain with the 36th Battalion, battling the Japanese across the Gazelle Peninsula towards Rabaul during 1944 and 1945. He joined the 15th Works Company a month before his discharge in December 1945. Clark died on 17 August 1978 and is buried in the ex-service's section of Woden Cemetery.
