Ridley Pakenham-Walsh joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1908. He was appointed as Instructor in Military Engineering and Surveying at the Royal Military College, Duntroon on 13 March 1914 and stayed until 17 June 1915 when he left for England to rejoin the Royal Engineers shortly after marrying Mabel Smith in Sydney. Pakenham-Walsh served on Gallipoli and on the Western Front.
Pakenham-Walsh remained in the British Army after the war rising to the rank of Major-General in 1939 and serving as Engineer in Chief to the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1939-40. He commanded the British Army in Northern Ireland 1940-41 and retired in 1946. He died on 3 November 1966 in Surrey, England aged 78 years.
