Hall entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon in February 1915 and graduated at the end of 1917 when he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in a Special Draft of RMC graduates which arrived in England in April 1918. He served in France with the 46th Battalion from July 1918 but, as the AIF pushed towards Peronne in the Somme region, Hall was shot in the foot and scalp and sent to hospital in England where he stayed until after the armistice was signed. He rejoined his unit in December 1918 and spent time in Belgium. Hall served in World War 2 and was discharged in 1949 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
