Notes
Sutherland entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon in February 1915 and graduated at the end of 1917 when he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in a Special Draft of RMC graduates which arrived in England in April 1918. He joined the 4th Field Company Engineers in France in September 1918 and by the beginning of 1919 he was attached to the 4th Division Headquarters. Sutherland continued to serve in the army but died in an aircraft accident while on active service in New Guinea on 28 September 1943, aged 45 years. At first he was buried at Soputa War Cemetery with full military honours, but he was later interred at Bomana War Cemetery near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
