Macartney joined the Queensland Garrison Artillery in 1900 and then the Royal Australian Artillery in 1901. He married Alexandrina Vans Zichy-Woinarski on 18 December 1912 but they had no children. He was attached to the Royal Military College, Duntroon in February 1911 and became Instructor of Drill in December 1912, a position he held until August 1916. He was a parishioner at St. John's in Reid where he served on the parish council as secretary, treasurer and as a churchwarden. In September 1915 he led the military escort for the funeral procession of Sir William Throsby Bridges from St. John's to Mt. Pleasant. Macartney served in artillery units during World War 1, firstly as Commanding Officer of the 15th Battery, 5th Field Artillery Brigade (part of the 2nd Division of the AIF). In October 1916 Macartney became Commanding officer of the 7th Field Artillery Brigade (part of the 3rd Division) who he led through 1917. After filling a staff role through most of 1918 he was in command of the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade when the war ended. In January 1919 he commanded the 3rd Division Artillery before returning to Australia and becoming the Director of Drill at RMC. He retired to his property near Kentucky NSW and died in a car crash near Brisbane on 24 October 1932. He is buried in Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane.
