He arrived in France via Egypt as a Captain with the 53rd Battery of the 14th Field Artillery Brigade and then commanded a trench mortar battery from October 1916 until January 1917 when he was appointed as a Staff Officer. He served with the 54th Battalion during an enemy attack in April 1918 at Villers Bretonneux where he moved his Company from support to cover the right flank of the battalion which had become exposed. Although he was recommended for a Military Cross for relieving a critical situation, Crombie did not receive any awards. He served with the 53rd Battalion from July until the end of the war. He died in Heidelberg, Victoria in 1979 aged 85 years.
