Notes
Berryman entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon on 9 March 1913, graduated on 28 June 1915 and was commissioned a Lieutenant three days later. He arrived in France in March 1916 with the 12th Battery of the 4th Field Artillery Brigade and was promoted to Captain and appointed as Adjutant after four months. In 1917 he trained as a Staff Officer and commanded the the18th Battery of 6th Field Artillery Brigade from September 1917 to May 1918 with the rank of Major. Thereafter he commanded the 14th Battery of the 5th Field Artillery Brigade during the fighting in the Somme valley including at Mont St. Quentin in August and September 1918. Berryman was wounded during the battle and finished the war as Brigade Major for the 7th Infantry Brigade.
He married in Sydney in November 1925 and in 1931 became the army representative at the Australian High Commission in London. In World War 2 he served as chief of staff to Sir Thomas Blamey and was present at the formal surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. He was Director General of the royal visit of Queen Elizabeth in 1954 and was knighted the same year. He died on 28 May 1981 in Sydney.
