Jenkins entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon on 9 March 1913 and was probably a spectator at the Canberra naming ceremony a few days later. He graduated on 28 June 1915 and was appointed as a Lieutenant two days later, sailing for Egypt in November 1915. He was on his way to Gallipoli when the withdrawal took place the week before Christmas 1915. As the AIF was reorganised during early 1916 in Egypt, Jenkins was posted to a number of units before being promoted to Captain and given command of the 17th Battery in the 6th Field Artillery Brigade in July 1916. While returning from the front line near Gueudecourt, France on 21 December 1916, Jenkins was struck by a shell as he passed Needle Dump and was killed. He was buried in Dartmoor Cemetery not far from Albert, France.
