Lang arrived in Australia with his family from New Zealand as a 15 year old around 1909 and entered the Royal Military College on 7 March 1912. Prior to that he had worked for the Justice Department in NSW and for the Queensland Insurance Company. He was a member of the Honour Guard at the naming ceremony in Canberra on 12 March 1913. His class was graduated early on 2 November 1914 and Lang joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment the following day as a Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Section. He arrived on Gallipoli in May 1915 and was promoted to Captain in early August 1915. He was attached to the 2nd Battalion during the Battle of Lone Pine when he was seriously wounded on 6 August 1916. He was evacuated from Gallipoli aboard the Hospital Ship Guildford Castle but died from his wounds on 13 August 1915 and was buried at sea.

Description - height 6 feet 3 inches, weight 160 pounds, chest 35½-39 inches, dark complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair, Church of England, cut under left eye.
