His father, James, was a fettler on the railways and he is listed as a pupil at the Williamsdale School from 1899 to 25 April 1902 when the Goodwin family left for Crookwell. His younger brother Alex gave Williamsdale as his place of birth when he enlisted in 1916. Phillip is listed as a competitor at a pea-rifle shooting contest at Michelago in July 1907 where his older brother James was commemorated by his former school when he was killed in action at Polygon Wood in September 1917.

Phillip Goodwin served with the 56th Battalion in France from April 1917 and was probably involved in the Second Battle of Bullecourt (May 1917) and Polygon Wood (in Belgium in September 1917). He was wounded in a mustard gas attack the following month near Polygon Wood and in May 1918 at Morlancourt in the Somme he was shot in the knee. He was wounded for a third time in a gas attack near Peronne (France) in September 1918. After convalescing for several months, he returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged in July 1919.
