Notes
Haylock had been a Military Staff Clerk at the Royal Military College for two years when he applied for a commission in the AIF at the end of March 1916. Enlisting a few days later, Haylock had already been farewelled by the Sergeants Mess at the College who presented him with a case of pipes. He served with the artillery, arriving in France at the end of 1916 and was at the Battle of Ypres in September 1917 with the 8th Field Artillery Brigade (part of the 3rd Division). He was wounded in the shoulder during the fighting and at the end of 1917 he was hospitalised for three months. He rejoined 8FAB in March 1918 but two months later received an adverse report on his performance from his commanding officer who complained about slackness and poor discipline in the wagon lines. Consequently, Haylock was sent home and his appointment was terminated.
