Notes

Bartley served in the Middle East with the 3 Anti Tank Regiment. In early 1941 his unit was part of the 'Tobruk Derby', a retreat across Libya chased by the German Afrika Corps. On 8 April Bartley's unit was trying to break through the German line near Mechili when he was captured and became a prisoner of war. He spent time in a POW camp at Sulmona in Italy and was then sent to Stalag VIIIA and Stalag VIIIB in Silesia in 1944. He had been released by July 1945.
