The family later moved to Adaminaby where McLaughlin was living when he enlisted. He landed on Gallipoli on 26 April 1915 as a Private with the 2nd Battalion and at the end of July was treated for colic and returned to Cairo for treatment. Due to general debility and varicose veins he returned to Australia and was discharged on 15 March 1916. McLaughlin later lived in Sydney and died on 16 February 1945.
