Charles Young was a survey draftsman with the Lands and Survey Branch of the Department of Home Affairs in Canberra when he enlisted for the first time in June 1915. He was appointed a Lieutenant, embarking for Egypt in January 1916 with the 7th Battalion. After being treated for a hernia and gastric ulcers, Young was transferred to the 59th Battalion (part of the 15th Brigade) in June and arrived in France with the 59th Battalion at the end of that month. His unit was involved in the Battle of Fromelles on 19/20 July 1916. By October he had become seriously ill with dysentery and gastro enteritis and returned to Australia where his appointment was terminated on 7 September 1917.

Exactly a year later he re-enlisted with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) and served in Rabaul as a temporary 2nd Lieutenant from the end of December 1918. He returned to Australia in September 1919 where his appointment was terminated on 17 October 1919.

Young lived in Canberra after the war and died there on 17 April 1957. He was cremated in Melbourne.
