He enlisted on 2 January 1918 as an officer in the Australian Survey Corps, which he eventually commanded with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and served in England until his appointment was terminated on 16 July 1919. He died on 19 February 1959 in Yackandandah, Victoria. The NLA image shows Vance with Charles Scrivener (seated at his right) and Ernest Dowling (standing at rear of his left shoulder) in 1914 during survey work near Port Augusta for the Transcontinental Railway.
