Notes
David Shumack was only 19 years of age when he enlisted so he needed parental permission. His father, Samuel Shumack, did not object to his enlistment but simply refused to give permission. Consequently Shumack was discharged.
The Shumacks had farmed at 'Springvale' (now a part of the suburb of Cook) until the property was resumed in 1915 and they moved to the Singleton district. He was the brother of John Everest Shumack and his father was the author of 'Tales and Legends of Canberra Pioneers'. Shumack joined the NSW Police in 1923 and served at stations in Goulburn and the Sydney area. After retiring and the death of his wife he lived with his daughters. He died on 19 December 1989 at his daughter's home in Goulburn.
