Notes
Johnston was a 22 year old, originally from Cootamundra, who worked as a groom at the Royal Military College, Duntroon during 1915 up until he enlisted on 11 August 1915 at Warwick Farm. He embarked from Sydney on 23 October 1915 and joined the Western Frontier Force in Egypt on 14 January 1916. He served in Palestine with the 1st Light Horse Regiment, was detached to the Imperial Mounted Division in April 1917 but was diagnosed shortly after with debility and returned to Australia via hospital in Cape Town. On 16 February 1918 he was discharged in Sydney as medically unfit.
Description - height 5 feet 7 inches, weight 166 pounds, chest 39½ inches, medium complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, Presbyterian.
