Notes

Hayes was a groom and orderly at the Royal Military College, Duntroon from September 1912 until he enlisted on 17 March 1916 in Goulburn at 40 years of age. He had spent over 18 years in the Royal Field Artillery and was consequently appointed as acting Sergeant in the 55th Battalion. He arrived in England in November 1916 but developed chronic bronchitis and emphysema causing him to return to Australia where he was discharged on 7 July 1917. He did not serve on the front line.
