Gillan was promoted to Major in 1920 but, despite a bout of malaria, transferred to the Civil Administration in Rabaul before his appointment was terminated on 18 October 1921. He is recorded as being employed at Duntroon after the war, up until 1925. The four AWM photographs show Gillan during his time in Rabaul. He was living in Nunawading when he died on 31 July 1959.
