Notes

Gillan was an accountant who commenced with the Treasury Department in 1908 and transferred to Duntroon in 1915. Upon enlisting he was given the rank of Captain and served in Rabaul with the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force as paymaster. Gillan was promoted to Major in 1920 but, despite a bout of malaria, transferred to the Civil Administration in Rabaul before his appointment was terminated on 18 October 1921. He is recorded as being employed at Duntroon after the war, up until 1925. The four AWM photographs show Gillan during his time in Rabaul. He was living in Nunawading when he died on 31 July 1959.
