George De Salis was the son of George Arthur Charles Fane De Salis and Mary St Lawrence Irving Smith and the grandson of the Rev. Pierce Galliard Smith of St John's Church, Canberra and Emily Philippa Davis. George and his family lived at 'Cuppacumbalong' (near Tharwa) first, then for several years at 'Lambrigg' (near Tharwa) before moving to 'Soglio' Michelago. He helped manage the property 'Soglio' before enlisting for service in World War 1.
De Salis embarked for overseas in May 1917 and arrived in France as a Gunner with the 101st Howitzer Battery in November 1917. He served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade until the end of the war. He was granted leave from July to September 1919 to attend a farming course at Virginia Water in England.
After the war he bought his own property 'Longfield' at Dalgety, NSW. George married Margaret Raine in 1925 and they had two daughters, Susan and Mary. George and Margaret retired to Sydney where he died on 31 August 1969. He is buried in Sydney.
