Notes
Carroll worked as a groom at the Royal Military College, Duntroon from 1914 to 1915. He was 27 years of age when he enlisted on 17 August 1915 at Warwick Farm. He arrived in France in March 1916 as a Driver with the 2nd Division Ammunition Column, but shortly after transferring to the 2nd Australian Division Base Depot at Etaples he was admitted to hospital with heart over strain and reverted to the rank of Gunner. Carroll was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and valvular disease of the heart. It was probably of long standing, but his war service had aggravated the condition. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 4 April 1918.
