Notes

Butt was born in 1885 in Sutton and grew up in the Majura valley where he was a farmer. He and his twin brother Tom were prominent local cyclists. On 13 October 1917 he enlisted, serving with the 13th Battalion. He did not see action, not reaching France until January 1919. In June he was promoted to temporary Corporal, returning to Australia in July. On 5 September 1919 he was discharged in Sydney. He died in December 1959 and is buried in Woden Cemetery.
