Notes

Barry was employed as a cook and messman at the Royal Military College, Duntroon from June 1911 until he enlisted on 10 November 1914 at Liverpool. He was born in Tunbridge Wells, England in 1893 (according to his World War 2 file) but listed his age as 23 years in 1914. He served on Gallipoli with C Company of the 13th Battalion landing on 25 April and going up to Quinn's Post the following day. He was admitted to the New Zealand Field Ambulance in May with conjunctivitis and evacuated to hospital in Egypt. Barry returned to Melbourne in August and was sent to Broadmeadows in Victoria for duty.

He was re-attested at Broadmeadows the following May because his papers were lost, this time serving with the 23rd Battalion. He arrived in France in October 1916 but was admitted to hospital with trench feet in November and sent to England for treatment. He spent the next 17 months in England where he was charged with being AWL twice, being out of bounds once and with allowing a soldier in his charge to escape. Barry returned to France in April 1918 with the 21st Battalion but once again found himself in trouble, going AWL twice and being court martialled. He was charged with deserting his Majesty's Service in October 1918 and was sentenced to four years at H.M. Prison, Portland. He was released in May 1919 and his sentence suspended.

Barry returned to Australia in July 1919 and after being discharged is shown as being employed at RMC until 1922. Barry also served in World War 2. He enlisted on 1 September 1941 with the 7 Garrison Battalion and was discharged on 30 October 1943.
