Notes

Young worked for the Property and Survey Branch of the Department of Interior before enlisting. He served initially with the 3rd Battalion militia from 1939 and in July 1941 was commissioned as a lieutenant. He resigned to enlist in the RAAF and trained as a pilot. He arrived in England in April 1943 and flew Lancaster bombers before he joined 102 Squadron, flying a Halifax bomber from the RAF base at Pocklington, England. On 12 August 1944 he and his crew were part of an operation to bomb Russelsheim near Frankfurt in Germany. His plane was attacked by a night fighter at about 0100 hours on 13 August 1944 while flying over Rehborn, 21 miles north of Kaiserslautern, and crashed killing all on board. It was his 21st operational flight. The crew, including Young, were buried in graves 7-11, plot 8, row E in the Rheinberg British Military Cemetery near Duisberg, Germany.

Young has the rare distinction of being commissioned in two arms of the military during the one war. The AWM image shows Young and his crew.
